
East Lothian Council’s Economic Development Division actively promotes industry and commerce by encouraging the establishment of new businesses and the expansion of existing ones.
Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian (SEE&L) contract Economic Development Division to provide the Business Gateway service in East Lothian. This service is free impartial and confidential and offers one to one advice, business planning and support for new business start-ups, as well as information about funding opportunities.

Our Business Advisers also offer strategic planning and financial advice for companies looking to expand or re-locate in East Lothian, as well as support and advice for on-going companies. Clients can also obtain information about grants and loans available for investment and development. Economic Development Division organise training courses and seminars for local businesses, the majority of which are free of charge. Economic Development Division provides grant funding support to growing businesses based in the region. In addition discretionary relocation assistance is available depending on the number of jobs being created.
Interest free loans of up to £10,000 are available from East Lothian Investments Ltd to facilitate local businesses looking to expand their operations or to individuals wishing to start up in business.

The Division is implementing an extensive tourism and golf development plan in partnership with Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothians, Visit Scotland Edinburgh and Lothians and local businesses.
The Division co-ordinates the Council’s EU projects and funding applications under Objective 2, Objective 3, Leader+ and other sources. Advice about Lottery and other funding sources is also available. Twinning is another of the Division’s responsibilities.
As well as funding support, the Division helps local voluntary agencies that are reviewing their business strategies, particularly those that want to establish themselves as social enterprises.
The Division leads on the Council’s new Rural Development policy and organises the Rural Action Group, which includes the NFU, the Haddington Farmers’ Market, local farmers and politicians. We also deliver the Leader+ community initiative in East Lothian and Midlothian rural areas.
